I’m honoured to be part of this mix tape celebrating Imbolc, created by The Department of Energy
“The first release from The Department of Energy is inspired by the tributaries and tribulations of Cork’s Lee Valley. This Landscape Mixtape contains potcheen anecdotes, airborne survey planes, archive material, drowned houses, hard ambience, alluvial oak woods, unidentified flying objects, a lost mp3, a broken wav, 1980’s radio, 2020 visions, fast eddies, sloe meanders, preliminary research, semi-state bodies, statements of intent, folklore, feathered friends and the knowledge of salmon.
In the 1950’s the ESB flooded parts of the Lee Valley, when they built two hydroelectric dams to power Cork city. Gerry O’Riordan’s memories of this event (interviewed by Dr Richard Scriven for his Cork Is The Lee podcast) form part of the mixtape, alongside layers of local field recordings made by the Department of Energy over the past 12 months and extracts from some 39 year old cassettes. Have you ever noticed how a fast flowing stream sounds like environmental tape hiss?
Recently resurfaced tracks by DOE members (Mercury.mp3 & Borderland.wav) sit next to newer arrangements by Local Gods, all counterpointed by two fathoms-deep meditations from LAIR“
“The Department of Energy was inspired by a GAA pitch, a white quartz standing stone, an electrical station and a stream. That was February last year and since then we’ve made recordings, taken photographs and just sat and listened, all over the Lee Valley.
That raw material has been shaped into a Landscape Mixtape for your listening pleasure. It will be publicly streaming this Saturday – Brigid’s day. We’ll have our first physical release on the first of May. And something to mark every Celtic festival thereafter.”

This is the first in a series of collaborations for 2020 with the wonderful artist and human Adam Perry.
Those who are familiar with my work, may know we have collaborated before. We found we, and our process of connecting to the realms beyond, resonate with each other and so have decided to do a series of one minute pieces throughout the year. Our first piece goes up in tandem with the moon going full at 7.21pm on the 10th here in Ireland and 6.21am on the 11th in his home of Melbourne Australia.
From Adam: “I did a world reading and was shown an Egyptian pyramid and then present day efforts to resurrect the light body of a soul into the body of a deceased human. In this image the warm goddess Isis, accompanied by many souls, is drawn to our successes at immortality in a top secret bunker.” From Laura: “I tuned in to the pictures of a reading Adam did and allowed the sounds to pour through. From my perspective, Isis came forth wanting to be heard.”

My Samhain offering to you this year is a meditation I created with Andrea Maxine Frade.
It is downloadable so you can listen offline, and both Andrea and I hope you find it a supportive tool in connecting to the Autumnal element of Earth.

LAIR / 101 Beats Per Minute

I am very happy to be a part of this cool collection.
Dunk Murphy is the brains behind this interesting idea- a group of named producers each make a track at 101BPM and his Countersunk label release them all with the artist name as 101 Beats Per Minute.
You get an interesting, diverse collection of music AND a fun game trying to figure out who wrote which track!
The list of the 23 contributors for this second round of the project are up on the Bandcamp page: https://countersunk.bandcamp.com/album/101-beats-per-minute-ii where you can also ‘name your price’ for the collection. A new track is released each Thursday, so you can catch the stream of the newest track there too.
It was a very different way for me to approach writing a track- if you know my music, BPM is not something I really attach to! I found the whole process of making it really fun and am so happy with the outcome. Thanks to Dunk for inviting me to be a part of it!
